University of Texas Tyler Online MA in School Counseling
The University of Texas at Tyler (UT Tyler) offers a fully online master of arts (MA) in school counseling program designed for students who want to become K-12 school counselors. This 48-credit program prepares graduates to support students’ personal, academic, social, emotional, college, and career development while collaborating with teachers, staff, parents, and communities.
The program uses a mix of synchronous, semi-synchronous, and asynchronous learning with interactive tools and evening classes to fit working professionals’ schedules. Students learn counseling theories, cultural sensitivity, leadership, intervention strategies, assessment, program development, mental health, and child development, aligned with Texas School Counselor standards and American School Counselor Association guidelines. A three-part fieldwork component provides 500 supervised onsite hours in a local school, including intake interviews, individual or group counseling, parent meetings, career guidance, and classroom activities.
The MA in school counseling equips students to act as one-stop resources for student well-being, designing comprehensive school counseling programs that promote academic growth, community engagement, and wellness. Key courses include counseling theories and applications; foundations and ethics of school counseling; career counseling and assessment; advanced principles of school counseling; mental health in schools; and two supervised internships in school counseling, plus a practicum in clinical mental health counseling. The block-sequenced curriculum starts in summer, allows completion in two years, and has a 100 percent pass rate on the School Counselor TExES certification exam.
Admission to the MA in school counseling requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution, official transcripts from all institutions, three recommendation forms, an appropriate GPA per Texas Administrative Code, a department information sheet with a statement of purpose, and an admissions or screening interview. Out-of-state students can complete the MA but are ineligible for Texas certification and must verify acceptance into their state’s program.
